STAR is not a script, it is a running order. Interviewers are listening for whether you can separate what happened from what you did about it — and most weak answers fail by spending 40 seconds on setup and 5 on the decision.
Situation — 25–40 words
Where and when, in one or two sentences. Only the context needed to follow the rest.
Task — 15–30 words
What you personally owned. "We" hides you, and the interviewer is hiring you, not the team.
Action — 60–110 words
The decisions in order, including the option you rejected and why. This is the part that gets scored.
Result — 25–50 words
A number if you have one, then what you would do differently. Ending on the number sounds rehearsed; ending on the lesson sounds senior.
How long an answer should be
Aim for 60 to 90 seconds of speech. At a measured interview pace of about 150 words per minute that is roughly 150 to 220 words — which is what the counter above is checking. Two failure modes, both common:
Under ~45 seconds
Usually means the Action section is missing. You named the problem and the outcome but skipped the decisions in between, so there is nothing for the interviewer to score. Add the option you rejected and why.
Past two minutes
Usually means the Situation grew. Cut it to the two facts needed to follow the rest: most interviewers stop tracking a story after 90 seconds and start waiting for the end, and your best material is at the end.
A worked example
Question: Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision. 164 words, about 66 seconds spoken.
Last year my team decided to rewrite our reporting service because it was, in the phrase everyone kept using, hard to work with. I was the one on call for it, so I was asked to scope the rewrite.
I pushed back before scoping anything. I pulled six months of incidents and found that five of the seven outages came from one query path, not from the architecture. So instead of a quarter-long rewrite I proposed two weeks: add the missing index, move that path behind a cache, and put a latency alert on it. The tradeoff I named out loud was that we would still have the old code — and I said I would come back with real numbers in a month, which is what made the room agree to wait.
Incidents went to zero for the next two quarters and we never did the rewrite. What I would do differently: I brought the incident data after the decision, not before it.
Notice the proportions — two sentences of setup, one of ownership, the bulk on decisions, and a result that ends on a lesson rather than the number. Practise it against the timer above, out loud; reading it silently hides every place you run out of breath.

Is this AI interview answer generator really free?
Yes — no account, no email, no trial. The four boxes, the counters and the timer run in your browser; each AI draft uses one call from the same free daily allowance as this site’s other AI tools (20 a day).
Does the AI make up facts in my answer?
No. It writes only from the question and the experience you give it. Anything a strong answer needs that you did not give — a number, a result, the decision you made — comes back as a [blank] to fill in, never a guess. With no experience at all, the draft is a template whose facts are all blanks.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
Only when you press Write it with AI: then the question, the job and the text in the experience box are sent to this site’s server and on to our AI provider to write the draft, and none of it is stored. Otherwise nothing you type leaves your browser. A working draft is kept in your browser’s local storage so a refresh does not lose it, and the Reset button erases it.
How long should an interview answer be?
